Update with name of victim:
Authorities have released the name of the South Dakota pilot who was killed when his small plane crashed in northwest Iowa. The Lyon County Sheriff’s office received a 911 call of an airplane crash at the Larchwood airport shortly after 1 P.M. Wednesday.

A single-seat airplane crashed and flipped while attempting to land on a grass airstrip. The pilot of the aircraft, identified as 57-year-old Robert Akins of Sioux Falls, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The FAA will be on site today to conduct an investigation.

His name is being withheld until all family notifications have been made. The FAA will be on site today to conduct an investigation.
