A woman is dead after being struck in a crosswalk in downtown Clear Lake. The Clear Lake Police Department says they were called to the intersection of 4th and Main shortly before 9:30 yesterday morning where they found 73-year-old Carolyn Mahaffey lying in the intersection and being attended to by several people.
Witnesses say 87-year-old Max Christensen of Clear Lake was driving a truck that struck Mahaffey in the crosswalk as it traveled south across the intersection. Mahaffey was transported by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City, where she died Tuesday evening.
Due to the seriousness of the injuries, the police requested the Iowa State Patrol to send an accident reconstruction expert to do the investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.
