A 17-year-old male is dead after a shooting Sunday night near Rudd. A news release from the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department says that two 17-year-old males and a 19-year-old female, all from the Mason City area, were at 1545 Foothill Avenue just west of Rudd when deputies responded at about 7:45 last night.

The parents of one of the juveniles owned the property where the shooting allegedly took place. The sheriff’s office says the firearm involved in the shooting was a 22-caliber rifle. One of the juveniles was airlifted by helicopter to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City where he was pronounced dead.

Floyd County Sheriff Rick Lynch says the incident is still in the early stages of the investigation and that the names of the people are being withheld to keep the integrity of the investigation intact, as well as to ensure that the family members of the juveniles involved in the incident have been notified. Lynch says more information will be released as the investigation continues.

The Floyd County Sheriff’s Department is being assisted in the investigation by the Floyd County County Attorney’s Office as well as the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
