A police standoff in Waterloo on Thursday afternoon ended with the arrest of a suspect in Wednesday night’s double shooting. Thirty-three-year-old Kevin Ambrose is accused of shooting his live-in girlfriend, 33-year-old Marlene Buss, and her mother, 69-year-old Kay Straw.

Buss survived but Straw died. A police tactical team surrounded the home where Ambrose was barricaded, according to Safety Services Director Dan Trelka. He says the suspect was taken into custody “in an event that was quite uneventful and ended peaceably.”

Trelka confirmed Buss had filed a protection order against Ambrose on Wednesday and that it was in effect at the time of the shootings. He says Ambrose does not face charges in connection with the shootings yet, as police are still completing their investigation.

“There was a warrant issued for him for being a felon in possession of a firearm,” Trelka says. “That’s what he’s being held on and the county attorney will review the case and decide the most appropriate charge to proceed with.” Ambrose was taken to the Black Hawk County Jail.
