An eastern Iowa woman has been arrested just days after resigning from her job at Cedar Rapids Washington High School. Police say 41-year-old Heather Adams is charged with sexual exploitation by a school employee after officers allegedly found Adams having sex with a student in a car Sunday night.

Adams resigned from her job as a chemistry teacher on Monday. Cedar Rapids Police Sergeant Cristy Hamblin says Adams and the 18-year-old male were not on school property. “I hope the public would never view it as something reflective on the high school,” Hamblin said. “This happens at the best high schools in the country and the worst high schools in the country.”

Hamblin noted that normally this would be considered a legal sex act, because the male student is 18. However, Adams’ status as a high school teacher makes it a sex crime. The charge is a misdemeanor, but if convicted, Adams would be subject to the sex offender registry for 10 years.
