The South Hardin School Board of Education this week decided to suspend the School’s varsity football program for this fall only. Superintendent Randall Nichols explains the Boards decision. “The school board decided to suspend the varsity program only for one year and to focus the attention on the junior varsity and freshman programs for this coming fall,” Nichols said.

Nichols says the decision was made for safety reasons, after the district surveyed the boys to find out who planned to participate in football. “At most there were going to be 8 junior and senior boys playing football this fall and the school board felt that was not adequate, and it meant putting younger, less mature, less physically capable freshmen and sophomores on the varsity field. And they just felt that was not safe for the students,” Nichols says.

Nichols says the Board made the decision at this time, in order to allow their 2012 opponents to fill out their schedule to have 9 games.

The district has enough numbers for continuing the JV and freshman schedule.
