A chain reaction accident on U.S. Highway 59, north of Holstein on Wednesday in a construction zone left one person dead and four others injured.

Five vehicles were stopped waiting for a pilot car to escort the vehicles through a construction zone, when a semi truck and trailer driven by Gordon Draskovic of Windsor Ontario, Canada failed to stop, and instead hit the vehicles.

Dead is 75-year-old Larry Watts of Cherokee. Many of the other injured parties were airlifted to both Cherokee and to Sioux City hospitals. This is the second such accident in Ida County within the last month resulting in a fatality involving semi trucks that failed to stop at a road construction site while vehicles were stopped waiting for a pilot escort vehicle.
