A young northwest Iowa girl has died after being found at the bottom of a municipal swimming pool. The girl’s name and age have not been released, but she was found at the bottom of the Rock Rapids swimming pool on Wednesday night.

The Lyon County Ambulance was sent to an emergency call at the pool. Sheriff Blythe Bloemendaal says the call came in about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. He says it’s unclear exactly how the girl ended up at the bottom of the pool.

Bloemendaael said investigators don’t want to speculate on the cause of the incident yet, but they are following up on a report of possible pre-existing medical conditions. The girl was transported to Sanford, Rock Rapids Hospital and then airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital, where she has since died.

The incident remains under investigation.
