A Newton couple charged in the death of their five-onth-old son made their first appearance in court today. An investigation into Kaiden Olea’s death culminated last night in the arrest of his 24-year-old parents, Joseph Olea and Chelsea Miller.

Olea’s bond has been set at $250,000. He has been charged with first-degree murder and child endangerment resulting in death. Miller faces an identical child endangerment charge and her bond is set at $10,000.

Police say Olea was the sole caregiver for his son on January 10th from six A.M. until his son was taken to a Des Moines hospital with serious head and neck injuries. His father is accused of intentionally using unreasonable force on his son resulting in death.

Police say Miller was aware of her boyfriend’s violent tendencies, but still allowed him to care for Kaiden while unsupervised.
