A hospital in northwest Iowa has experienced a unique baby boom this week. Cindy Running, the nurse manager at St. Luke’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Sioux City, says her staff has been caring for six sets of newborn twins.

“In the last few years, since we’ve moved into our new unit, this is one of the first times we’ve hit six sets of twins,” Running said. “In the old unit, I’m told by people who have a little more longevity than myself, that we did hit seven at one point and that maybe included a set of triplets.”

Other than doubling the admission process, Running notes the multiple sets of twins aren’t providing any extra challenges for staff.

“We’re enjoying it,” Running said. “It’s kind of fun to see all the unique names that come with the twins and the mix of boys and girls. It’s so exciting for the families to have this double blessing.”

All the babies are healthy and doing well, according to Running. At least one set of twins have been sent home.
