Authorities have released information on a Newell man who was killed in a car-semi head-on collision Tuesday morning. Buena Vista County Sheriff Gary Launderville says the accident occurred about 9:20 three-and-a-half miles east of Newell on highway seven.

It was determined a westbound car collided head-on with an eastbound semi. The driver of the car, 24-year-old Jonathon David Ohrtman of Newell, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi, 32-year-old Robert Bainbridge of Albert City, received minor injuries and was taken by private vehicle for medical treatment.

Launderville says the initial investigation indicates the car crossed the center line into the path of the semi. During the extraction of Ohrtman, heat became a large issue, with several firefighters needing treatment for heat exhaustion.

One Newell firefighter was taken by ambulance to hospital in Storm Lake for treatment of heat exhaustion.
