A central Iowa woman accused in the deaths of her newborn twins has pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder. Twenty-two-year-old Jackie Burkle of Huxley was arrested on January 7 after police were called to her home.

Officers learned Burkle has given birth to twin girls. The bodies of the girls were found in the trunk of Burkle’s car parked in the driveway. Burkle was charged with first-degree murder.

As part of a plea agreement with prosecutors, Burkle plead guilty to charges of second-degree murder today in Story County District Court. She was sentenced to two 50-year prison sentences to be served concurrently. Burkle did not make any statements at today’s hearing.
