The mystery of a long-missing scuba diver from northeast Iowa is finally solved. Over the weekend, scuba divers exploring a deep shipwreck in Lake Michigan off Door County, Wisconsin, discovered a body at a depth of 225 feet.

The body was equipped in dive gear and the water temp was about 36 degrees. After an autopsy, authorities have made a positive I.D. and say it’s 52-year-old Dirk Kann of Guttenburg, Iowa. Kann vanished 13 years ago while scuba diving with friends on the same wreck, the Lakeland.

There had been repeated searches for Kann’s body after he disappeared in September of 1999, but at that depth and temperature, it’s challenging to stay down long.
