Grinnell College will have a new starting quarterback for its football opener. Senior Mike McCabe was dismissed from the squad. He passed for more than 23 hundred yards and 23 toucdowns a year ago as the Pioneers posted a 5-5 record.

Grinnell coach Jeff Pederson says McCabe broke some team rules and he says freshman Sam Poulos of Chicago takes over the offense.

Pederson says Poulos is not big, but is a good scrambler. Pederson says the loss of McCabe means an experienced defense will be counted on to step up.

He says they were already expecting the defense to take on more load as they lost a lot of key players on offense, and he says it’s a veteran group that should be up to the challenge.

Pederson says they are excited about Cornell College returning to the Midwest Conference. He says it gives them a natural rival that is close and a school they have had some good games with in the past.

The Pioneers open at home on September first against Carleton College.
