Dinsdale sculpture

A large sculpture depicting three doves in flight will be dedicated next week in central Iowa as a monument to peace.

The sculptor, Ron Dinsdale of Huxley, was commissioned to create the work and he says he started with a 14-ton block of Indiana limestone that was just over ten feet tall.

“I got the stone the end of September of last year and I started carving,” Dinsdale says.

“I had to pour a concrete slab so I had something strong enough to set it on. I built a structure around it, about an 18-foot tall structure.” The sculpture is called, “Path of Peace.”

He describes the carving as being “three doves, forever turning.” The inspiration for the design came many years ago.

“When I grew up, on the farm, I used to love walking out in the woods,” Dinsdale says. “I’d see these birds, flying back and forth. It was so tranquil and peaceful. I’ve had that idea in my mind forever and finally had the chance to put it in a monumental piece.” The sculpture will be dedicated at 1 P.M. Monday at the Des Moines Area Community College Urban Campus in Des Moines.

Dinsdale taught art at Northeast Hamilton School in Blairsburg and Valley High School in West Des Moines.
