Officials are releasing more information in connection with a fatal shooting near Cantril on Tuesday morning. The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation says shortly before 11:00 a.m., the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department responded to multiple reports of a man with a gun and wearing a military uniform walking along Highway 2.

That person has been identifed as 59-year-old Robert M. Dooley of Brighton. When deputies Brad Hudson and Jon Tharp arrived on the scene, they observed Dooley had a rifle and was ordered to drop it.

Deputies asked him several times to drop the rifle. Dooley allegedly turned toward the deputies and raised the rifle toward them. Due to Dooley’s actions, Tharp fired one shot, resulting in Dooley’s death. The Van Buren County Sheriff’s department policy requires Tharp to been placed on paid administrative leave pending the conclusion of the D.C.I.’s investigation.
