Students in schools across Iowa are marking this Character Counts Week with a variety of events. Amy Smit, spokeswoman for Character Counts in Iowa, says part of the goal is to enhance and sustain the positive qualities of Iowans through character development.

Schools are having activities like assemblies or special recognition ceremonies. Students at Denison Elementary even recorded a video parody of the popular “Call Me Maybe” song, focusing instead on the six pillars of character.

Those are: Caring, Citizenship, Fairness, Respect, Responsibility and Trustworthiness. Smit says the program is marking its 15th year of success in Iowa.

“We’re really finding that the six pillars are very common language among parents and schools and adults these days,” she says. “We’ve been around long enough it’s really starting to be part of the culture in Iowa.” For more information, visit: www.charactercountsiniowa.org
