Two men who allegedly robbed a bank and than shot two law officers as they fled in a high speed chase were caught just before seven o’clock last night near the northeast Iowa town of Frederika.
The Iowa Department of Public Safety says twenty-four year old Jeremiah Mumford from New Hampton is charged with six counts of attempted murder and five counts of terrorism.
Nineteen-year-old William Clayton from Osage, Iowa is charged with six counts of aiding and abetting and five counts of terrorism.
The two men are accused of robbing the Maynard Savings Bank and then shooting at officers as they raced away. They fled Fayette County into Bremer County and abandoned their vehicle near a quary.
Iowa State Patrol Trooper, Bob Conrad, says officers from several area departments surrounded the wooded area and Waterloo police discovered the men trying to escape. “They didn’t know what they heard, ended up finding the suspects basically trying to get around our perimeter, that’s whey we had tight perimeter set,” Conrad said.
Conrad said the men were taken into custody without any problems. “We did not have any shots fired, we did not have any incidents to law enforcement, or even the suspects at this point in time,” Conrad said.
The Department of Public Safety released an update on the injured officers today. They are, Trooper Mark Domino from the Iowa State Patrol ,who was shot in the arm. He was transported to an area hospital, treated and released.
Sumner Police Chief Dennis Cain was shot in the hand, thumb, and neck. He was transported by life flight to an eastern Iowa hospital where he has undergone surgery and remains in critical, but stable condition.
The DPS says officers from more than 16 federal, state, county, and local agencies were part of the search for the men.
