Governor Terry Branstad today denied requests from four people to commute their prison sentences. Branstad denied the request of 67-year-old Evelyn Lou Tangie to commute her second-degree murder sentence for a on July 27, 1996 in Wapello County.

Court records show she was found guilty in the death of her boyfriend, John Terry, afer his body was discovered in rural Wapello County. The cause of death was a blow to the head with a blunt object, and a pickax handle with Terry’s blood on it was found nearby. Investigating officers say Tangie gave conflicting stories about her knowledge of Terry’s death, and blamed it on someone else.

The governor also denied the requests to commute three first-degree robbery sentences. Those requests came from 29-year-old Nikkolas Kemp, who committed his crime on November 19, 2001 in Polk County. Thirty-three-year-old DeMarcus Montrell McGee, who committed his crime on January 22, 1998 in Black Hawk County.

And 30-year-old Andrew Lee Stephens, who committed his crime on May 12, 2003 in Black Hawk County.
