A former Newton doctor is facing a trial on 114 counts involving the unlawful distribution of drugs. The indictment against Lafayette James Twyner reveals the former doctor is accused of prescribing medication in a manner that is likely to cause and did cause dependence, addiction, and in one case death.

The indictment also alleges Twyner caused various insurance companies to be billed for prescriptions and services that were not for a legitimate medical purpose. Court records show that a search warrant was issued on April fifth for records at the Urgent Care Clinic in Newton where the 63-year-old Twyner had practiced medicine.

The clinic closed one month later. Twyner has voluntarily given up his medical license and will remain free until his trial begins in January. If he is convicted on all counts, he could face thousands of dollars of fines and a lengthy prison sentence.
