Election data and exit polls show President Obama secured victory in Iowa by winning in urban areas — and by winning among female voters. The president carried much of eastern and central Iowa, while Romney won much of less-populous western Iowa.

Exit polls show there was only one age group that Romney won — Iowans who are between the ages of 40 and 49. Obama tied Romney in the crucial over 65 category. Those older voters cast just over a fourth of the votes in Iowa.

Obama also did 16 points better than Romney among Iowa voters who are under the age of 29. Romney did do better among men, holding a nine point edge over Obama with male voters.

But women voters in Iowa overwhelmingly chose Obama over Romney, by a 19 point margin. The exit polls show a variety of other data. Obama, for instance, was the overwhelming choice of voters who earn less than $50,000 a year while Romney won voters who said they earn six-figure annual incomes.
