Three state football championships will be decided at the UNI-Dome Thursday. In the eight-player division, second ranked Don Bosco looks to wrap up their first season as an eight-man team as the state champs. Dons coach Colby Yoder says he wasn’t sure his team was capable of winning state when they reported for camp earlier this fall.
“I didn’t really know exactly what was going to happen, I knew we’d be competative. Obviously we have some real good athletes back and a good nucleus of our team back. I didn’t really know how quick we would pick up the game, but the kids have adjusted real well,” Yoder says.
The Dons face off against seventh rated Marcus-Meridan-Cleghorn tomorrow in the first of the six state title games to be played this week. Yoder says MMC is very similar to Don Bosco in their offensive balance when it comes to passing and running and he says it will be a good challenge that they are up to.
The Dons advanced to the state championship with a 78-76 overtime win over Murray in the semifinal round. While he doesn’t envision the teams putting up quite as many points, he does think Thursday’s game could get fairly high-scoring.
