Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz says Greg Davis will return as offensive coordinator for the Hawkeyes. Davis was a lightning rod for criticism during the just completed 4-8 season as Iowa’s offense ranked 114th out of 120 teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
“I think Greg’s an excellent football coach. He’s a tremendous professional and a tremendous person. So I’ve got every bit of confidence that Greg will be in. Not only getting into tenures or job security and all that stuff. That’s not what we’re here for. But Greg’s a tremendous football coach. We wouldn’t have brought him here ten months ago or however many if we didn’t feel that way. I feel stronger about the kind of coaching person he is now after working with him,” Ferentz said.
Ferentz said Davis has adjusted to the new job. “I think Greg’s probably a smarter Iowa coach now than he was in February. How could you not be? We’ve had some great discussion, and I think he’s got a real firm handle on our best path moving forward at least at this point it’s early in the game. I think we’re all seeing it the same way. At least he and I are,” Ferentz said. ” As we get the whole staff together, we’ll have those discussions too.”
Ferentz says nobody is satisfied with the past season and they are determined to get things turned around. “I can’t imagine anybody being happy with it, except the people who don’t like us. I’m sure they are thrilled to death. But nobody in our program is happy or satisfied, you can’t be, it’s just not what we want,” Ferentz said.
Ferentz is confident the program has a bright future. “We all realize we have a lot of work to do but this is hardly a hopeless situation, it’s not we’re trying to climb Mt. Everest here. We’re in a tough conference, but we have more than enough, I think, potential currently on campus to be a successful football team next year and hopefully we are going to add to it,” Ferentz said.
The 4-8 record was the worst for the program since back in 2000.
