An Oskaloosa man is back in custody, along with his wife, after she helped him escape from the Wapello County Jail Monday.

Wapello County Sheriff Mark Miller says 38-year-old Curtis Bunnell was being transported to the courthouse around 11 a.m. when he made the getaway.

“His accomplice was waiting with a car running, a window down and the seat pulled back. It happened so fast, he was literally able to take a couple steps and dove into the car,” Miller said.

“The correctional officer had some other prisoners with him…so the car was able to drive down the street.”

Bunnell’s wife, 27-year-old Latisha Bunnell, was allegedly driving the car. The couple was captured around one o’clock this morning at a home in Oskaloosa. “We found him in the basement crawl space area hiding from us,” Miller said.

Curtis Bunnell was being held on a charge of first-degree robbery after he allegedly robbed an Ottumwa landlord at gunpoint last month. He’s now facing additional charges, including escape.

His wife, Latisha, is also facing a felony charge for aiding and abetting the escape.
