More snow is falling across the state today and it’s causing some problems for motorists. National Weather Service meteorologist Aubry Wilkens says the heaviest snow is expected over northern Iowa.

The forecast for the area calls for 2 to 3 inches of snow, with isolated areas possibly receiving up to 5 inches. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through Friday at noon for 26 counties in northwest and north-central Iowa. Wilkens doesn’t expect the advisory will be expanded.

“Right now, we’re planning on leaving it where it’s at. If anything, it might get extended in time into Friday. It looks like snow will linger a little bit longer into Friday,” Wilkens said. Other areas of Iowa are likely to receive very little snow.

But, the snow could be mixed with freezing drizzle at times on Friday. Cold conditions are expected to remain in place through the weekend. Wilkens said lows on Friday night will reach the single digits and teens. Highs will be in the teens and 20s Friday and Saturday, before possibly reaching the low 30s in some areas on Sunday.

The Iowa State Patrol reported numerous traffic accidents in western Iowa today as the snow began to fall. Troopers said vehicles have been sliding off roadways as the road surface appears clear, but black ice is forming and making patches of roadways very slick.
