In Iowa Conference action this weekend, the Buena Vista men’s basketball team will try to win its 10th-straight game on Saturday with a visit to the University of Dubuque. The Beavers are 10-3 overall and off to a 2-0 start in the league race. Center Wes Nordquist has been a big part of their success. The senior from Adel is averaging more than 18 points and 11 rebounds per game.

“He’s just been a dominant player at times,” says Buena Vista coach Brian Van Haaften. “He’s a guy that you have to spend a lot of time preparing for…We’re got four of our six guards that play right now are shooting the ball better than 40 percent from behind the arc and, you put that together, you’re going to be a pretty good basketball team.”

Van Haaften says the play of Nordquist around the basket opens up the perimeter for the other shooters.

“He’s going to go down as one of the better offensive post players that I’ve had here in my 17 years,” Van Haaften says, “and then you put good guards around him — it makes for a tough combination.”

Saturday’s game at Dubuque is the Beaver’s first road contest in league play. Dubuque is 11-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
