Attorney General Tom Miller is asking the state legislature to extend a law for another year which requires creditors to inform troubled homeowners about Iowa’s Mortgage Help Hotline. Miller says there are still many Iowans facing foreclosure of their homes.

“When they get foreclosure notice, then they get notice of the hotline…that’s provided now for a number of years some really good service and help to people who are in distress, getting loan modifications, in many situations,” Miller says. Attorney General Miller says the good news is the mortgage crisis is winding down.

“The housing market is getting better, quite a bit better, but there are still a number of homeowners who are struggling as a result of the mortgage meltdown that took place a few years ago,” Miller says. He says unemployment is still pushing some homeowners into foreclosure.

Officials at the Iowa Mortgage Hotline say they’re still handling about 100 foreclosure cases every week. You can call the hotline at 1-877-622-4866. Or go on-line at www.IowaMortgageHelp.com.
