Twelve people, including 8 children, escaped separate house fires in eastern Iowa overnight. Firefighters were sent to a home in the Tama County town of Traer at 3:30 this morning.

A man and his wife escaped after the fire was spotted in the living room. No one was injured, as three teenage children also escaped through an upper story window. Meanwhile, in Dubuque County, a fire at 6:30 last night caused heavy damage to a home in Durango.

Two adults and five children escaped without injury. The children range in age from 2 to 7. The fire is believed to have started in an attached garage.

The exact causes of both fires remain under investigation.
