A state audit finds the city clerk in a small southeast Iowa town repeatedly overpaid herself.

Beverly Runyon was the city clerk in Stockport, a town of about 300 people in Van Buren County. Runyon was fired in October of 2011.

According to the audit, almost $50,000 in the Stockport city treasury was misspent or undeposited. That includes over $15,000 in salary overpayments to Runyon, plus Runyon failed to pay bills and taxes on time, racking up thousands of dollars in penalties and late fees.

Officials found undeposited checks and unpaid bills in Runyon’s city office, plus auditors say Runyon used scraps of paper rather than a time sheet to record her work hours. The minutes of many Stockport city council meetings were missing or never written in the first place according to the audit report.

The audit has been forwarded to state and county officials who would be in charge of prosecuting the case if it goes to court.
