While parts of Iowa had unseasonable highs in the mid 50s on Sunday, temperatures will be falling throughout the day as a cold front moves in. Meteorologist Craig Cogil, at the National Weather Service, says a Wind Advisory is posted for 26 counties in northwest and north-central Iowa from noon until 9 tonight.

Cogil says wind gusts will pick up this afternoon and may reach 40 miles an hour. There’s also a possibility of light rain and snow as temperatures drop to around zero tonight. Cogil says he’s keeping a close eye on a much larger storm system that should arrive in a few days.

He says it could bring widespread snowfall on Thursday and into Thursday night with the heaviest snow in the northwest third to half of Iowa. Several inches of snow are expected. Earlier, forecasters had said the storm could bring up to 20 inches of snow. Now, they’re thinking it may be more in the range of six to 12 inches.

Cogil says, “As we get closer, we’ll have a better idea on exact amounts, but certainly several inches look probable by Thursday evening.” He says the snow system should be out of Iowa by Friday, but there is another chance of snow in the state on Sunday.
