A private bus carrying the Simpson College softball team collided with a semi this morning in central Iowa. Simpson College spokesperson Jill Johnson says it happened shortly after the team set out for a weekend tournament in Marquette, Michigan.

“They were traveling east on I-80 near the Newton exit when a semi tractor-trailer in front of them jack-knifed and they were unable to avoid hitting the trailer,” Johnson said. Four coaches and 18 team members were on the charter bus. None of them were seriously injured.

“Apparently, the bus driver did a very good job…and there were just bumps and bruises for our team and coaches on the bus,” Johnson said. There’s no word on the condition of the driver of the semi.

Johnson said the softball team boarded another charter bus and resumed their trip to the Finlandia University Dome Tournament.
