Fire struck a home Monday afternoon in southwest Iowa near Elliott. Red Oak Fire Chief Jim Blount says while they were on the way, they were told a bedroom on the second floor was on fire and the flames were spreading.

The first crews arrived on the scene within 10 minutes of the call and the home was heavily involved. One adult was injured in the fire and taken to the hospital.

A total of 11 people lived in the house, four adults and seven children. The chief says fire crews from Elliott, Henderson and Griswold also responsed to the blaze and helped get the flames under control.

The fire extended to the first floor. A dollar amount on the damage has not yet been released, but the structure was declared a total loss. The residents are receiving help from the Red Cross in Shenandoah.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Red Oak Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
