Top ranked and defending state champion Davenport Assumption jumped out to a 16-0 lead and never looked back in a 71-25 win over Red Oak in a class 3A quarterfinal. Assumption coach Mallory Youngblut says she is happy with the effort as you always want to have a good first game.

Fourth ranked Cascade held number five Bondurant-Farrar to one field goal over the final three quarters to post a 33-27 victory in a 3A quarterfinal round game. Cascade coach Mike Sconsa says,”It’s usually that way with us all the time, we are smashmouth basketball, but we found way and the amount of guts and hard work our kids showed was fantastic.”

Alexis Conaway scored 17 points and hauled down 11 rebounds to lead third ranked MOC-Floyd Valley to a 51-30 victory over Mid-Prairie in a class 3A quarterfinal round game. Conaway says you expect tough defense in the tournament, but she says they have a balanced team, so if someone is not hitting, they can go to another option.

The Lady Dutch pulled away in the second half and outscored Mid-Prairie 16-4 in the fourth quarter.

Casey Sievert scored 18 points as third rated Estherville-Lincoln Central beat #9 Spirit Lake 55-39 in a class 3A quarterfinal round game. The Midgettes are making their third straight appearance at the tournament and Sievert says that experience was a factor.

“All the jitters of being at state, all that excitement, we’re still excited about being at state, but we’re kind of used to it,” Sievert says.

Maquoketa Valley drained its first nine shots of the game as the Wildcats upended third ranked IKM-Manning in a class 2A quarterfinal. Maquoketa Valley coach Scott Moenck says good defense was also a key. The Wildcats limited IKM-Manning to 29 percent shooting in the opening half.

In the 4A opening round #8 Harlan beat #3 Benton 52-42..and Waverly Shell Rock cruised to a 67-45 win over Winterset.
