Iowa coach Fran McCaffery says freshman guard Mike Gesell may return to the court on Thursday when the Hawkeyes open the Big Ten Tournament against Northwestern.

Gesell has missed the last three games with a foot injury. “He’s been shooting, so he’s going to try and run a little bit today and then he’ll try to practice a little bit today and maybe tomorrow,” McCaffery says.

He says while Gesell will try to play, it depends on how he feels before they know how much he will play. McCaffery says he is not sure if Gesell will play the point or off guard.

Iowa is 20-11 overall and will likely need to win at least two games to have a shot at getting into the NCAA Tournament. “I think it’s important that we are in the discussion, I think we certainly earned that consideration in light of the fact that we were 9-9 in the toughest conference in the country,” McCaffery says.
