An Iowa City police officer assisted with a special, unexpected delivery this week. Officer Kevin Wolfe pulled over a black SUV for speeding through downtown Iowa City late Sunday night.

The dash board camera captured the male driver who stepped out and yelled at Wolfe that his wife was having a baby. “Sir, we’re delivering a baby right here right now. I’m going to need your help,” the male driver said. “I had every expectation that when they said ‘were having a baby’ they meant there was a baby on the way and we would just drive to the hospital,” Wolfe said.

When he arrived at the passenger side door, Wolfe was shocked to see the baby’s head. The baby can be heard crying on the police video, while the surprised mother yells, “he’s here, he’s here, oh my God.” Wolfe said the mother did 95-percent of the work. “I think everybody was equally surprised,” Wolfe said.

The officer helped coach the mother through the final stages of labor and helped wrap the baby in a blanket. Wolfe, who’s been on the Iowa City police force for more than six years, escorted the couple to the hospital, which was just two blocks away. “This one is on the top end of the ‘feel good’ part of the job,” Wolfe said. “I’d say it’s pretty crazy, this one I’ll be telling for a while.”

The mother and newborn were discharged from the hospital Wednesday and they’re said to be in good health.
