An Iowa State Patrol Trooper has been selected as one of just 10 law enforcement officers from across the country to receive an award from the National Association of Police Organizations. Trooper Mark Domino of Charles City was selected for a “TOP COPS” Award for his role in the arrest of two bank robbery suspects last October.

Domino, who exchanged gunfire with the suspects and was struck in the right bicep, says he’s honored to be receiving the award. “After 31 years of being a trooper, I appreciate the thanks that everyone has given me and helped me throughout my year,” Domino said.

Following the robbery of the Maynard Savings Bank on October 30, Domino started a solo pursuit of the suspects’ vehicle. Domino was shot, but continued to return fire and pursue the bank robbers until they crashed in a ditch.

The suspects were apprehended later that day. Domino credits all the law enforcement officers who responded.

“I was in my bed by the time they caught the people,” Domino said. “There were a lot of people who were involved in this thing and I will accept this award on behalf of them because it was a team effort.”

Domino will receive his award at the 20th annual “TOP COPS” dinner held during National Police Week in Washington, D.C. on May 12. Iowa State Patrol Colonel David Garrison nominated Domino for the award.

Sumner Police Chief Dennis Cain was also shot by one of the alleged bank robbers and continues to recover from his injuries. The two suspects, William Clayton and Jeremiah Mumford, have both pleaded not guilty to various charges in the case.
