The Iowa and Iowa State women’s basketball teams are both headed to the NCAA Tournament. Iowa State has landed a #5 seed, but the Cyclones will play at #12 seed Gonzaga on Saturday.

ISU Coach Bill Fennelly insists his team’s comfortable with the draw and the trip to Spokane, Washington. “Our kids would rather go play a great Gonzaga team in front of 6,000 people than play in an empty guy somewhere,” Fennelly said. “We’re excited about the opportunity and we’re looking forward to playing.”

Iowa State enters Saturday’s game at 3:15 p.m. (CDT) with a record of 23-8. The Bulldogs are 27-5 and enter the tournament with a 15-game winning streak. “We know what we’re up against, but we’ve played in some really tough environments in our league, in Iowa City and at UNI,” Fennelly said. “It’s not anything our kids are going to be bothered by. When you play in (the Big 12), you’re going to play against good teams in tough environments and certainly that’ll be one on Saturday.”

This marks the Iowa State women’s 7th straight NCAA appearance. The 9th seeded Iowa Hawkeyes (20-12), meanwhile, will host 8th seeded Miami of Florida at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. The winner will likely face top-seed and Final Four favorite Notre Dame.
