An outreach initiative to help veterans is being held in the Sioux City area this weekend. Representatives of the state and federal Departments of Veterans Affairs will help answer questions, according to Will Ackerman, with the Nebraska-Western Iowa VA Health Care System.

“The idea is to get out and talk to veterans in their communities, talk to them about the benefits and services that they may be eligible for,” Ackerman says, in an effort to increase awareness. Ackerman says veterans can apply for benefits at the open house.

“A lot of veterans get really confused by all of the different eligibility requirements so this is a way we can bring our experts out and talk to the veterans,” he says. The open house will be held at the American Legion Post in South Sioux City, Nebraska, today (Friday) from 11 A.M. to 7 P.M. , and Saturday from 9 A.M. to 1 P.M.
