A pipe bomb found this morning in a Cedar Falls neighborhood was detonated without incident this afternoon. A Cedar Falls Public Works employee found a piece of PVC pipe with both ends capped inside a manhole cover during regular maintenance.

Cedar Falls Police were called to the 2300 block of Royal Drive to investigate, and eventually the Waterloo Bomb Squad was dispatched to the scene. Authorities set up a perimeter of several blocks around the location of the pipe bomb, and used the bomb squad’s robot to safely detonate the device.

Cedar Falls Police say they still aren’t sure exactly how long the bomb had been in the sewer, or if it is any kind of a “copycat” incident related to Monday’s bombing at the Boston Marathon.
