Online driver’s license renewals in the state could be a reality, under a new bill passed by the Iowa Senate Tuesday. The Iowa Senate unanimously approved a bill that would allow Iowans to renew their driver’s licenses on the Department of Transportation’s website.

Under the bill, the service would be available at every other renewal, to ensure proper vision testing. Those with major eye or health issues would not be able to renew online. Supporters of the bill say around 138,000 residents could potentially use the service, saving the state an estimated $1.2 million annually – and your time waiting in line.

The proposal must win House approval before it goes to the governor for his consideration.
