More large hail hit parts of north-central and northeast Iowa overnight after ping pong ball-sized hail fell earlier in the day. Meteorologist Rod Donovan, at the National Weather Service, say a number of counties were placed under Severe Thunderstorm Watches and Warnings through early this morning.

“Our biggest hail report last night was in the Kanawha area where we had inch-and-a-half to two inch hail with that storm,” Donovan says. “Otherwise, a lot of general nickel to quarter-sized hail in the eastern Highway 20 corridor. A lot of it covered the ground so where it was hailing, there was a lot of it.”

Forecasters say there’s a possibility for more severe weather in Iowa later today as a cold front moves in. High temperatures today may reach the 70s and 80s, but they’ll be falling soon as the storms approach. “Up in the Dakotas and Montana, it’s already in the 30s and 40s,” Donovan says.

“We are expecting much colder weather especially tomorrow into Thursday. By Thursday, we could have some areas of snow across the northwestern part of the state and high temperatures in the 30s.” The forecast calls for highs to be back in the 60s by next week.
