Nine men in their 20s are being held in the Dubuque County Jail, most face rioting charges but one may face serious federal charges after three shooting incidents in Dubuque earlier this week.

“Two of the most recently arrested individuals were actually arrested Monday night during the initial shooting,” says Lieutenant Scott Baxter, a spokesman for Dubuque Police.

On Monday night, just before nine o’clock, Dubuque police got a report of shots being fired near a park and when police arrived they found a group of people fighting in the street. Police arrested two men and charged them with disorderly conduct.

About two hours later on Monday night police received a tip that someone in the same area had a gun. Baxter says police wound up arresting a 29-year-old.

“The individual, Danny Campbell, Jr., that was arrested for firing at officers and fleeing from officers had two stolen weapons in his possession. He was also a felon, so he’s looking at potential federal prosecution on those charges,” Baxter says. “…We’ve had extensive contact with Mr. Campbell. He has an extensive criminal history.”

A third shooting happened in the middle of Wednesday afternoon and Lieutenant Baxter says police believe it was related to the street fight on Monday evening.

“They appear to start out as disturbances or two groups encountering one another,” Baxter says. “Obviously these two groups have issues with one another.”

Police are still sorting through a “multitude” of clues about the individuals who’ve been charged, according to Baxter. Some of the nine have moved to Dubuque from large Midwestern cities, a few are relatives and Baxter says some of the people in custody have been involved in “past gang activity.” The three incidents have happened on Iowa Street in Dubuque.

“There’s a park nearby,” Baxter says. “There’s a combination of commercial properties and residential properties within that immediate area.”

Dubuque police have been reviewing surveillance video from the neighborhood and “more arrests are anticipated” according to Baxter.
