Former Iowa Hawkeye runner Eric Sowinski says a stunning performance during the indoor season has been a boost to his career as he gets set to compete in the 800 meter run at the USA Track and Field Championships. Sowinski pulled off a stunning upset by winning the 600 at the Millrose Games this past winter and set a new American record in the process.

He says it has been exciting to be able to get into some bigger races and the win also helped him get a sponsor. But Sowinski does not feel the new sponsor or the success he enjoyed during the indoor season will place added pressure on him this week.

“I don’t think it changes too much. I’m just going to go out there and put myself in the race and run how I always do. I can’t worry how everybody else is going to run, I just focus on myself and good things will happen,” Sowinski says.

Sowinski has been training in Iowa and feels thast will help him deal with the expected hot weather this weekend. He says he has been on the track in the early afternoon when it is still hot and that has helped him adjust to the heat.

Sowinski’s first round race is Thursday afternoon.
