More information will be released Friday about a company that’s planning a $700 million investment in central Iowa. Kathy Anderson, marketing manager for the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA), says the company behind the so-called “Project Mountain” is seeking state incentives.

The company should be identified at tomorrow’s IEDA Board meeting in Des Moines. The company wants to build a data center in West Des Moines. “The project is seeking $20 million in tax credits through the high quality jobs program,” Anderson says. West Des Moines already houses a Microsoft data center. Similar data centers in Iowa include Google in Council Bluffs and IBM in Dubuque.

Facebook officials plan to invest up to $1 billion for a data center in Altoona. Anderson says “Project Mountain” appears to be similar to those operations. The company behind the project in West Des Moines has informed IEDA officials that at least 24 jobs would be created at a pay level of $23.12 per hour.

City leaders in West Des Moines have said this will be the “first phase” of investment by the company, with additional phases expected in the future.
