Waterloo Police on Tuesday found a body floating in the Cedar River. Captain Tim Pillack says officers were called at 2:20 p.m. to the 3900 block of Texas Street on the report of a vehicle that had been parked off the roadway on a gravel drive since Sunday.

“As the officers started to search around the area, they found a body in the Cedar River,” Pillack said. “Through the investigation, we identified the gal found in the river as the daughter of the registered owner.”

The woman found in the river is identified as 35-year-old Shanda Werkmeister of Waterloo. The case, for now, is being treated as a suspicious death.

“We don’t know how she died, so we’re waiting for the autopsy to be performed (Thursday). Once we have the autopsy results, we’ll have a clearer picture of what happened,” Pillack said. The woman who owns the vehicle told police she had not seen her daughter for a couple of days.

Pillack said Werkmeister lived about two miles away from where she was found.
