The alleged driver of an SUV that hit and killed a Newton teenager back in April is now jailed. Lieutenant Wes Breckenridge with the Newton Police released a statement saying 41-year-old Daniel Loyd Edwards of Newton was arrested Tuesday.

Edwards is charged with homicide by vehicle, OWI, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Edwards is being held on a $27,300 bond.

Breckenridge states the charges stem from the April 21st accident that took the life of 14-year-old Brendan O’Brien. Just after 9 p.m. that Sunday evening, authorities were called to the 1100 block of East 19th Street North. The police have said O’Brien was in the street, and Edwards’ northbound SUV was not able to stop before hitting him.

The 14-year-old passed away just after 11:30 the following Tuesday morning, April 23rd, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
