The largest weekend of the Iowa Games begins later today in Ames. Spokesman Cory Kennedy says a total of 35 sports will be contested over the next three days. Soccer, the largest sport with 190 teams and over 2,000 athletes begins play, as does softball and track and field.

Kennedy says more than half of the events this weekend offer on site registration. Those sports include archery, kayaking, rowing, rugby, weight lifting. You get a commemorative t-shirt with your registration.

Kennedy says the city of Ames and Iowa State University remain outstanding partners for the Iowa Games for the past 27 years. He says Iowa State has continued to upgrade their facilities and it’s a great way for them to show those facilities off.

Kennedy says the usual an army of volunteers will be on hand to run the events with some 2,000 on hand as sports directors, officials and sport check ins.

The highlight of the weekend will be the opening ceremonies in Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday night. It includes skydivers, entertainers, fireworks. The keynote speaker is Matt Stutzman, “Iowa’s Armless Archer,” who will light the cauldron with a flaming arrow.
