The weather across Iowa this weekend will feel much more like late September than late July. Jeff Johnson is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

“We’re looking at highs only in the lower to mid 70s this weekend with cool nights — lows around 50 here in central Iowa on Saturday night,” Johnson says. “It’s going to be almost like fall…for late July, certainly well below normal.”

No precipitation is expected in the state this weekend, except for the possibility of a few scattered showers and storms this afternoon in far northern and eastern Iowa. Both Waterloo and Mason City posted record rainfall totals on Thursday. But, Johnson says much of the rest of the state stayed dry.

“Other areas of the state got very little rainfall. Down here in central Iowa, we got only scattered amounts,” Johnson says. “It was kind of hit and miss. For those who had the rain, it was certainly a nice rain, but unfortunately we didn’t have uniform coverage across the state.”

Waterloo recorded 3.09 inches of rain on Thursday. That broke the old record for the date, which was 1.5 inches on July 25, 2005. Mason City collected 1.64 inches of rain, breaking the old record of 1.51 inches set July 25, 1990.
