The Sioux County Sheriff says a northwest Iowa woman had a close call with her daughter while fishing at a pond near Rock Valley on Tuesday. Sioux County deputies say 29-year-old Rebecca Horton of Doon had been fishing at Pouder’s Pond.

She reported that her five-year-old daughter entered her 1996 Dodge pickup, which was parked near the boat ramp. The child disengaged the vehicle from park which caused it to start rolling backward toward the pond with the child still inside it. Horton was able to safely remove her daughter from the vehicle as it entered the water, shortly before it became completely submerged.

No injuries were reported. The next day, divers from the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team were able to successfully assist in the location and removal of the vehicle. The Dodge was found by divers at a depth of about 15 feet underwater. A tow truck was used to remove the vehicle from the pond.

The Dodge sustained about $6,500 in damages.
