The former band director at Sioux City North High School has been given probation and a suspended prison sentence for stealing band instruments. Forty-year-old Kevin Massey of Sergeant Bluff was sentenced on Thursday to three years of probation and a five year suspended prison sentence.

Massey had pleaded guilty to theft after prosecutors lowered the charge. He resigned from his job as band director at North High and has paid $5,000 restitution to the school district for the instruments.

Massey must still make restitution totaling more than $13,000 to three pawn shops. Massey told police he intended to buy back the instruments, which he sold to the pawn shops to get money for his gambling debts.
